Primary Memory

What is Memory:-
Memory can refer to any medium of data storage, it is usually referred to as RAM. Memory can be classified into two types as follow:

Primary Memory :

Primary memory is also known as the main/temporary/volatile memory. This kind of memory is available in the form of silicon chips and is assembled in the mainboard.

Secondary Memory

Secondary Memory is permanent storage memory.it is non-volatile in nature. Secondary memory is required because RAM is volatile in nature.

Primary Memory
RAM (Random Access Memory)
ROM (Read Only Memory)
There are two parameters on which RAM can be evaluated
1. Storage Capacity
2. Transfer Speed

RAM

PROM  (Programmable ROM)
EPROM (Erasable PROM)
EEPROM (Electrical EPROM)

ROM chip on Motherboard

ROM chip contains all the necessary information required during the booting operation of the computer. All the stored data of ROM (BIOS) is accessed through CMOS.

Memory Units

A bit is the smallest unit of memory.

8 Bits  =  1 Byte

4 Bits  = 1/2 Byte  (Nibble)

1024 Byte = 1 KB  (Kilo Byte)
1024 KB  =  1 MB  (Mega Byte)
1024 MB  = 1 GB   (Giga Byte)
1024 GB  = 1 TB    (Tera Byte)

1 KB  = 2^10 Byte
1 MB = 2^20 Byte
1GB  = 2^30 Byte
1TB  = 2^40 Byte
